Software for Cisco 2600 series.

I have a Cisco 2621 at home. It was bought secondhand a couple of years ago, and it works fine. At present it's running version 12.2. I want to install a WIC 1-ADSL in it but it doesn't support this card. I believe that it would if I were to upgrade it to version

12.4; can anybody confirm this please? If this is the case, how does one obtain software upgrades for Cisco kit? I'm in the UK. I work as an I.T. technician, but have no involvement with Cisco. Our equipment is all Extreme; we have a couple of Cisco routers on site, but they belong to, and are managed by, other organisations, we don't do any more than plug cables into them.

What version exactly are you running now?

Thank you.

I'm away this weekend, won't be home until late tomorrow; I'll check the version number then.

Stephen.

Please post the whole sh ver output. You may care to remove the system name (uptime) and serial number lines (Processor board ID) which may identify you.

This has full softwre version, hardware, installed memory, ROM version.

You are, I would think, rather unlikely to have XT software.

ADSL support is in 12.2T, IP plus feature set 'n' up , on

2621 according to

Sadly the FN does not list the hardware supported exactly but I don't think there was any other way to get ADSL over POTS other than the WIC1-ADSL (or later

-dg too).

Ok, I'll send this either Sunday night, or more likely Monday morning, depending on what time I get home.

THey've already asked for your specifics, but I'll give you general info. Most likely, you'll need a newer IOS version as you state. You probably also need more RAM and Flash in the box, which is why they are asking for hardware specifics. So, I'd have the expectations that you'll need to buy some more memory for the box, either from eBay or MemoryX.net or whatnot.

To be legit, you'd need SmartNet on the box to upgrade its IOS, and to buy that from a Cisco reseller such as CDW. But the 2621 should have already had end-of-maintenance on it several years ago, which means its too old to.

There are images floating around the Net though if you know what you are looking for..

What's 'SmartNet'?

There's basically no configuration on the router at the moment, beyond Fast Ethernet0/0 having an IP address so I can talk to it.

The Unknown WAN daughter card in WIC slot 0 should be the wic 1-ADSL.

There's no point in sending you show interfaces; since the card isn't recognised the interface doesn't exist.

At the moment I'm using the wic 1-ADSL in a borrowed 2801, where it does work. This has been borrowed from work, where we used to run Cisco courses a few years ago, but we no longer do, and the staff who ran them are no longer here. Since the 2801 isn't in use at work they're not in any great hurry to get it back, but I'd rather get the ADSL working on my 2600 of possible.

Note that the WIC-1ADSL is ADSL-1 only, and performs comparatively badly (when compared to consumergrade modems from e.g. Alcatel).

So, the line rate you achieve may be considerably less than what a more modern device would achieve.

Of course, this depends on the kind of ADSL service (type and rate) you have on your line.

Thanks for the tip Rob,but it's not a problem in this case; the wic 1-ADSL operating in the 2801 works as fast as I can get in my location; it's not the limiting factor.

You need as you suspected 12.2T or later with feature set IP Plus or above.

You have only 32M of DRAM (27648K + 5120K) and

8M Flash so, off the top of my head, that is going to be somewhat limiting in terms of software options. I would think.

I too have reasonse to suspect issues with the ADSL card, however the software for the card was improved in later IOS and there are stand-alone firmware updates available for free download. I am not sure that the free downloads apply in your situation, you would need to read the release notes.

Cisco no longer has 12.2T available for download.

Here is the lowest memory software available however you can only get it with a support contract "smartnet".

IP PLUS c2600-is-mz.123-3i.bin Release Date: 17/Aug/2005 Size: 16652.30 KB (17051948 bytes) Minimum Memory: DRAM:64 MB Flash:32 MB

IP/H323 PLUS BASIC c2600-is3x-mz.123-3i.bin Release Date: 17/Aug/2005 Size: 14222.22 KB (14563552 bytes) Minimum Memory: DRAM:64 MB Flash:16 MB

Occasionally it is possible to get an image to run in less RAM than is advertised "memory-size iomem". Oh! you can boot the router from a TFTP server and so in principle you don't absolutely require the flash. Could be inconvenient though.

If you want to play cisco at home you might be best to have a look on ebay. Get something with enough memories to do the job.

2621XM is maybe twice as fast as the non XM. I would not consider buying an non-XM.

Thank you for the reply. It looks like the answer is to hold on to the borrowed 2801 for as long as I need to use the wic 1-ADSL, which isn't very long, probably a few weeks. It's for testing running Mitel IP 'phones over a VPN to a remote site via ADSL.

The problem is that the 2801 doesn't support the ISDN card which I have, only the V3 version of it, so I may end up with two routers connected together through some sort of interface (I think there are some serial cards somewhere) and running the ISDN card in one router and the ADSL card in the other. At least it won't be for long.
