"Catalyst" is the name of line of products, manufactured by Cisco. It's like Toyota *Prius*, Toyota *Camry* or Toyota *4Runner*. "Cisco Catalyst" name represents a wide variety of network switches, not routers.

Hi Ravi,

The Cisco "Catalyst Switch Brand" was derived from Cisco's October

24th,1994, acquisition of Kalpana, Inc., a privately held manufacturer of LAN switching products.

Kalpana's product line consisted of modular and stackable platforms which extended the usability and data capacity of existing Ethernet LANs.

The market opportunity for Cisco's acquisition was the Catalyst 3000 Stackable Switching Solution.
