With SSN, what can human resources find out about a worker?
Can they find out how much the person was making before? Credit worthiness?

Expect that they can. I know lots of employers are now running credit checks on potential new employees. I saw a (alarmist) news report which claimed the some companies type your name into google to see what it says about you, and some people with the same names as people who might be undesirable have been having problems with it. That, at least, should probably be taken with a grain of salt.
