How do you know it's EMI ? RS-232 is kind of robust.

Serial data can usually be run for up to 150 feet over foiled twisted pair if the data rate is 9600 or below. It depends on a lot of factors. How long is the cable? What kind of cable is it? (single conductors or twisted pair) What speed are you running? (bit rate or baud rate) What kind of ground is on the equipment? The standard RS-232 cable is not twisted pair, so if you're using twisted pair, the problem may be caused by interference between transmit and receive.
