Ethernet cable shield

Hey I don't know a lot about cabling, but I'm curious. I'm hoping someone here can't point me to a website or explain to me what the ferrite shield does on cables. I've got them on my phone line to the DSL router and on the crossover cable. I've got a few on video cables and such as well. I'd just like to learn in which cases they're most useful and why.

TIA _Pilgrim

It's not a shield it's a choke. When placed on a cable, the ferrite creates a high impedance for common mode signals. Differential mode signals, such as the desired data, carried by the pairs, are not affected. It's a method of keeping the device from causing interference.
