are all cable modems external?

That's not a website. When you connect to http://192.168.1.1/, you are connecting to the router itself where you can get status/config info and configure it for your network. I would never have used the USB to start with as previously mentioned and wouldn't install any software that may come with the router.

Here are the Comcast instructions for your router from:

Comcast (formerly AT&T Broadband Internet)

Browse your Comcast or AT&T Broadband Internet paperwork for the "Adapter Address" or "MAC Address" and copy it down. If you do not find it, do the following: On your main computer click "start" then go to "run" then type into the box "winipcfg" and click "ok". Find the Ethernet adapter you are using (For example: Linksys 10/100 Ethernet Adapter), then click on "more info" and write down the number that says "Adapter Address".

After you have the Adapter Address, go to http://192.168.1.1 in your web browser and find "Wan IP Address". Click on the text to the right of the Wan IP Address that says "MAC Address". When the box pops up, type in the MAC address you wrote down earlier and click "OK".

** If you receive "Error Message 421" using Outlook or Outlook Express (or "Unable to send Message" errors with other email clients) using a Linksys BEFSR41 Router, follow the link below to resolve the problem.

A couple of other things you may try to recover with:

# Reset Cable/DSL Modem. If you have exhausted everything and still are having difficulties, try resetting the cable or DSL modem. You can accomplish this by turning off the cable or DSL modem for 3 seconds and then power the modem back on, then restart the computer.

# Reset Cable/DSL Router to factory default. If you want to start over and set the router to factory default, put the reset button with a pen or something small enough to go through the hole for 3 seconds or until the Red Diag Light comes on, then restart the computer.

Yes, this is the IP for the router. It's what was keyed in as the

website address in Internet Explorer to originally get to their website

to complete configuration. Once the connection was lost, I was not able

to return to this website.
